ΣXHALE is the new production by the artist group Fronte Vacuo, co-founded in Berlin by Marco Donnarumma, Margherita Pevere and Andrea Familari. The piece is a new rhizome of the series Humane Methods, which began in late 2019.

Fronte Vacuo is looking for 2 performers/actors/actresses to join the team as stable members of the cast of ΣXHALE. The team will be in residency at Volkstheater in Wien between late December until late January 2021 for rehearsals, with the production opening in Vienna in April/May, and subsequently tour theaters and festivals in Germany and Europe, likely until summer 2022.

ΣXHALE will be a durational, participative performance crossing the boundaries between dancetheatre, body art, biophysical music, artificial intelligence and bioart. The piece aims to “dissect” the violence of our time: the violence that humans exert towards their fellow human beings and their social and natural ecosystem; as well as the violence that is at the core of contemporary technological development.

ΣXHALE is a cooperation between Volkstheater, Fronte Vacuo and Academy for Theatre and Digitality Dortmund, in co-production with CTM Festival Berlin, in collaboration with tanzhaus nrw, and supported by Berlin Senate, Fonds Darstellende Künste, La Diagonale, Paris. In scientific partnership with the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the Laboratoire de Recherche en Informatique (LRI) of the University of Paris-Saclay.

Here is information, photos and videos of ΔNFANG and ℧R, the first two rhizome of the Humane Methods series.
And here are some previous works by Donnarumma, Pevere and Familari.

Who
We are looking for 2 performers/actors/actresses no less than 35-year old and preferably based in Wien to become stable members of our cast for ΣXHALE. We are looking for physical and artistic diversity – all kinds and forms of bodies, gender and identities are welcome, including people with disabilities, so we encourage these people to apply. You do not need a dance background – however we would like candidates to have at least 5 years of experience in any field of the performing arts, be it either dance, theater, circus, performance art or else. An interest in experimentation – physical and conceptual – is important. In a few scenes, performers may be asked to perform partly or fully naked. The fee is already secured through our funding structure and will cover rehearsals, premiere and touring.

When
Rehearsals are maximum 4 weeks between late December 2020 and the end of January 2021 at Volx Margareten, Wien.
World premiere is scheduled at Volx Margareten in April/May 2021. The rehearsal and premiere period in Wien will be paid as per Austrian Kollektivvertrag.

Touring includes
Tanzhaus NRW in Düsseldorf in late spring 2021.
CTM Festival in summer 2021.
Further guest performances are being negotiated spanning the whole 2021 until summer 2022.

How
Please send a brief motivational statement, a picture of yourself and, ideally, a video showcasing your most representative work to casting@frontevacuo.com – we will reply you in the next days as we collect responses and we will organize online meetings with selected candidates (unfortunately the current pandemic impedes us to meet in person).

We look forward to hear from you!
Best wishes,
Marco, Margherita and Andrea
Fronte Vacuo

About Fronte Vacuo
Fronte Vacuo exists to address the current convergence of ecological disruption, socio-political polarization and technological advance. As individual artists, Donnarumma, Pevere and Familari have been working across performing arts, media art, music and bioart for over fifteen years. Since 2014, they collaborate on hybrid performances, made of bodies, symbionts, sounds, machines and images.

Marco Donnarumma (DE) is an artist, performer and scholar weaving together contemporary performance, new media art and computer music since the early 2000s. He manipulates bodies, creates choreographies, engineers technology and composes sounds, thus combining disciplines and media into an oneiric, sensual, uncompromising aesthetics. He is internationally acknowledged for solo performances, stage productions and installations where the body becomes a morphing language to speak critically of ritual, power and technology.

With a visceral fascination for organic processes, Margherita Pevere (DE/FIN) is an artist and researcher investigating leakiness and transformation of biological and technological matter. Her practice employs a unique constellation of installations, performances, collections of plant and animal relics, workshops, and collaborations with bacterial cultures. In her symbiotic practice as artist-researcher, Pevere combines scientific protocols and Do-It-Yourself inquiry with intense, sophisticated aesthetics. Beyond her fascination with organic materials and processes, her practice is informed by a deep interest into symbolism, history, and controversy of the materials she adopts.

Having worked with theatre, music, contemporary art, especially in the live act audio/visual scene, Andrea Familari is a multimedia artist whose research derives from the investigation of generative processes, analysed through the lens of the noise and expressed via different media: video screenings, interactive installations, prints. Experimenting since 2011, he established his practice within the international underground media and art scenes. His repertoire tours regularly from theaters to concert halls, festivals and museums, and has been presented in 23 countries worldwide.
